From Turbulence to Clarity

How the Novya Leadership Lab Is Redefining Association Leadership

Leading a European association or nonprofit from Brussels has never been more complex. Policy cycles are tightening, funding frameworks are shifting, and stakeholders are asking for clearer impact and faster answers. At the same time, secretariat teams remain lean while expectations from boards and members keep climbing. It is a powerful combination – and it requires a different kind of leadership support.

The Novya Leadership Lab has been created specifically for this context. The first three‑month, cohort-based journey for Brussels-based association and nonprofit leaders ran from January to March 2026 and provided a forum for those who needed more than another short course or conference session. Leaders joined a small group of peers to work on three core dimensions: authentic leadership, empowering and growing teams, and leading agile transformation. Each dimension was designed with the realities of EU-focused organisations firmly in mind.

“This course gave me the belief that I can be a good leader,” one attendee of the first edition said. “It is a confidence-booster for anyone who might have doubts about how equipped they are to deal with the many challenges that running an association can throw at you.” This sense of renewed confidence - the shift from uncertainty to practical agency - is the starting point the Lab seeks for each participant.

We listened. Following the first cohort’s feedback that the most valuable hours were the ones spent together in person, the Lab now takes on a new dimension: a three-day residential retreat being held near Ghent in November 2026. The retreat provides an environment where leaders  can address the complex, immediate choices their organisations face through focused, uninterrupted time set aside for peer learning, practical workshops and personalised coaching.

Within this space, small facilitated peer groups will bring together participants with real cases to discuss, challenge and refine ideas through structured feedback from others who understand the realities of EU-facing associations. Longer workshop sessions will open up the conversation further, focusing on decision clarity, governance conversations and team development in response to the need for more concentrated in-person time. Individual coaching is built into the experience as one-to-one slots that help turn workshop insights into a practical action plan for the next 90 days, while a bespoke follow-up accountability structure keeps momentum alive after the retreat so that clarity becomes concrete change.
